Even after the opening of negotiations with the European Union
Putschist generals are
scandalously honored
by Turkish leaders
Just after the opening of negotiations between the European Union and
Turkey, the Turkish military showed once again its real face by organizing a
military ceremony at the General Staff headquarters in Ankara for General
Nurettin Ersin, died on October 4, 2005,who was one of the five putschist
generals having carried out the September 12, 1980 military coup.
The chief of the military junta, General Kenan Evren too was present at the
ceremony headed by General Hilmi Özkök, Chief of General Staff.
What is more scandalous is that President of the Republic Ahmet Necdet
Sezer, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül and
State Minister Ali Babacan, chief negotiator with the EU, attended a
religious ceremony made for the putschist general at the Kocatepe Mosque.
General Nurettin Ersin, equally land forces commander of the time, was the
responsible N°2 of mass arrests, tortures, executions, censorship and all
other violations of human rights. He was also one of the five generals who
imposed the anti-democratique 1982 Constitution, which is still in force.
The victims of this military coup have always demanded to bring these
generals before tribunal for the crimes that they committed, but the
political power has always protected them against these demands.
Moreover, the responsible N°1, General Kenan Evren, is still being honored
at each occasion by the political and the military leaders. Recently, at the
25th anniversary of the military coup d'état, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer
honored this bloody putschist by paying a visit to him at his villa in a
coastal town.
In the past, the Turkish State had already honored three putschist Ottoman
generals responsible for the Armenian Genocide, Enver Pasha, Talat Pasha and
Cemal Pasha.
